چکیده

In his paper Mr. Bechardinvestigates the effect of fibre content on the value of the Noel Deerr coefficient v. He finds that in general v increases as the fibre content diminishes, and calculates the average regression of v for 13 mills over a period of thirteen years. This average regression value' works out at -0.043971 for everyone per cent. of increase in fibre. He also obtains a formula for the variation of v. On referring to his manuscript, Mr. Bechard gave me a result which, with a slight change in notation, can be stated as follows:-

Biofuel Manufacturing from Woody Biomass: Effects of Sieve Size Used in Biomass Size Reduction

Size reduction is the first step for manufacturing biofuels from woody biomass. It is usually performed using milling machines and the particle size is controlled by the size of the sieve installed on a milling machine. There are reported studies about the effects of sieve size on energy consumption in milling of woody biomass. These studies show that energy consumption increased dramatically a...

Enhanced Sugar Alcohol Production from Cellulose by Pretreatment with Mixed Ball-Milling and Solid Acids

Efficient pretreatment is the key step in catalytic biomass conversion. Herein, a mixed ball-milling method was used to pretreat cellulose with a solid catalyst. The method was tested with solid acid and commercial 5 wt% Ru/C in water, and the effect of pretreatment on yield was measured by the hydrolytic-hydrogenation of cellulose to sugar alcohols, which are the platform compounds for the pro...

Combining hot-compressed water and ball milling pretreatments to improve the efficiency of the enzymatic hydrolysis of eucalyptus

BACKGROUND Lignocellulosic biomass such as wood is an attractive material for fuel ethanol production. Pretreatment technologies that increase the digestibility of cellulose and hemicellulose in the lignocellulosic biomass have a major influence on the cost of the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis and ethanol fermentation processes. Pretreatments without chemicals such as acids, bases or organic ...

Ball milling pretreatment of oil palm biomass for enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis.

Oil palm biomass, namely empty fruit bunch and frond fiber, were pretreated using a planetary ball mill. Particle sizes and crystallinity index values of the oil palm biomass were significantly reduced with extended ball mill processing time. The treatment efficiency was evaluated by the generation of glucose, xylose, and total sugar conversion yields from the pretreatment process compared to t...

Gaseous ammonia pretreatment lowers the required energy input for fine milling-enhanced enzymatic saccharification of switchgrass

BACKGROUND Fine milling of dry lignocellulosic biomass, without prior chemical pretreatment, can produce a high percent theoretical yield of sugars during subsequent enzymatic saccharification. However, the high sugar yields, necessary for a commercial biofuels process, are costly, with the milling energy input, necessary to achieve such yields even exceeding the energy content of the biomass. ...
